Editor’s note: The British and Irish Association of Law Librarians (BIALL) held its 40th Annual Conference in Manchester last week and, as usual, Sweet & Maxwell had a prominent presence at the event. Andrew Wood, director of Strategic Accounts for Westlaw Business, reports on customer interest from the Sweet & Maxwell stand.

The membership of BIALL includes many of our most important customers in legal practice, Government and Academia. Our new look exhibition stand and sponsorship of the President’s Dinner and Reception on the last full evening were good opportunities to showcase the Thomson Reuters brand and to meet with existing and potential customers both formally and informally.
The three top topics of conversation were:
Lawtel’s new User Interface
BIALL was the first opportunity to profile the new interface which is due for launch later this year. The new design, user interface and functionality enhancements caused much comment, and visitors were impressed with how much easier it was to locate information, particularly with the search function being moved to the landing page.
Subscribers were particularly interested in the new case transcript alerting functionality that will offer full alerting for both case transcripts and case digests. Librarians were also keen to hear about the new Lawtel Pending Actions feature which tracks future cases and access associated Statements of Case documents electronically.
Islamic Finance on Westlaw Business
This was the first UK opportunity to showcase the specialist Islamic Finance service aimed at commercial lawyers operating in this emerging and profitable market.
The Westlaw Business Islamic Finance Centre is the first source to consolidate Islamic Precedents, structures, standards, and guidance for lawyers located in one easy to use source. With the guidance materials from the Islamic Standards Finance Board and with the terms and conditions on over 6,000 Shari’ah compliant deals, visitors to the Sweet & Maxwell stand were impressed with the depth of content and coverage in an area where sourcing current and relevant information has previously been time-consuming and difficult.
Annotated Legislation on Westlaw UK
Much heralded, and causing a considerable degree of anticipation not just amongst BIALL members but amongst the other exhibitors, we conducted many demonstrations of the new Annotated Legislation Service for Westlaw UK.
Potential customers were particularly engaged by the difference between the practicality of our approach, the distinguished leading authorship (Daniel Greenberg) and the proposed currency of our services versus the main competitor.
