With so many lawyers switching firms this year, it’s more important than ever for a law firm to get all of the records associated with a new attorney managed correctly. This could mitigate potential problems, such as those relating to client conflict and professional ethics.
Monday at ILTA 09, Stacey Fiorillo from Baker Robbins & Company provided some helpful advice during a session titled “Lateral Lawyers Are Playing Musical Law Firms!” (Her slides are here).
Fiorillo said it’s all about the firm’s plan. The ultimate goals are a smooth transition for the lateral lawyer and risk avoidance for their new firm.
In this video interview, I asked Fiorillo what a firm’s most common mistake is when managing a lateral lawyer. I also got some advice from Charlene Wacenske, vice president of the Records Peer Group at ILTA, and records manager and senior applications administrative systems manager at Morrison & Foerster LLP:
