Remembering a visit by Sen. Kennedy

As his family, friends and colleagues gather to mark the life and death of United States Senator Edward Kennedy some people within Thomson Reuters, Legal, are thinking back to a visit Kennedy made to West’s headquarters in Eagan, Minn. on September 20, 1993.

Sen. Kennedy and his wife Victoria spent several hours at West, meeting with company leaders, touring the production facility and getting an overview of Westlaw, as this photo from West’s employee publication shows:

Behind Kennedy is Dorothy Molstad, then West’s manager of media relations. Vance Opperman, president of West at the time, is standing near Kennedy. Next to Opperman is Kathleen Lepp, manager of Westlaw education. Kennedy’s wife, Victoria, is seated at the keyboard on the right.

I talked with Lepp today about Kennedy’s visit. She put together the Westlaw presentation for him and recalled that he was fascinated by the information Westlaw contained, including its government databases, and speed with which Supreme Court decisions were distributed.

Lepp told me that since Victoria Kennedy was a lawyer she was eager to sit at the Westlaw terminal and run it herself.

“It was really an honor to be able to meet him,” Lepp said. “He was very down-to-earth and he and Vicky were very friendly. I’m honored that I had the opportunity to do that.”
