Patents and alternative energy

As businesses and countries around the world invest billions of dollars in public and private funds into development of alternative energy technology, patent activity is picking up steam.

Thomson Reuters IP Solutions just released a World IP Today Report, “Alternative Energy Powers Up.” It was written by Sue Cullen, Ph.D., IP Consulting Services director for IP Solutions.

You can access the report on the IP Solutions website.

Cullen writes, “If ever wind, solar or marine energies are to rival or supplant established energies like oil, gas and coal as viable, large-scale solutions to the world‘s growing energy needs, it will take more than individual efforts. These streams will need to converge to reduce redundancy and create larger opportunities.”

In the report, Cullen concludes by suggesting the key to such a convergence is increased collaboration across boundaries, partnerships and licensing.

“Companies large and small should take a look around and pay great attention to the competitive landscape, do more buying and licensing or become development partners with others who are pursuing complementary technologies or new ideas.”

David Brown, president of IP Solutions, talked about the alternative energy report in a television interview with Fox Business.

“It’s fascinating to see that despite the fact that investment in these areas has been going on for decades that we’re really almost in a rebirth or pioneering event because of the money behind renewable energy and there are literally hundreds of companies engaged in developing in this space,” said Brown.

“Patents in and of themselves do not reflect value,” Brown said on Fox Business. “But certain patents certainly create the opportunity for competitive advantage and sustainable products.”
