It’s been said there’s a big difference between information and insight. These days, there’s no shortage of online “news”.
To help busy professionals in the legal, tax and accounting and science markets cut through all the clutter and find the information they really need, Thomson Reuters is launching a new professional news initiative that combines the world-class journalism of Reuters with the insight and tools of products such as Westlaw and Checkpoint.
The aim is to combine information with analysis to provide the context and insight to help make informed business decisions.

What would our LegalTech coverage be without thoughts from Andy Adkins? Many of you are familiar with his work, but for those who aren’t, Adkins is a 20-year vet in this industry, currently serving as president of the Legal Technology Institute. He also owns the firm Adkins Consulting.
When we talked with him, he shared his belief that LegalTech has always been one of the greatest technology shows out there. It’s a place for firms of all sizes to get a first-hand look at the latest and greatest in law firm technology.
Like most of us, Adkins was quick to discover interesting trends and ideas coming out of LegalTech this year, one of which is cloud-based case management and workflow solutions. In this video, Adkins suggests that with greater funding now within reach, firms of all sizes are looking into new technology.
Even at an event as large and busy as LegalTech, Adkins is hard to miss in his trademark cowboy hat – and who would want to miss that?
One trend that we’re seeing at LegalTech is a focus on greater firm efficiency – and products and services that can help.
Thomson Reuters Engage from the Business of Law unit of Thomson Reuters, Legal helps firms do just that – manage how they engage with clients. Engage is the first Engagement Planning and Management (EPM) solution that helps lawyers build and manage matters and matter portfolios – including those using alternative fee arrangements.
We caught up with Mike Kohlenberger, director of Business Development for Hildebrandt Baker Robbins, to hear his thoughts on Engage:
Caught up with Jobst Elster, head of content, InsideLegal, at the ALM Editor’s Breakfast this morning, and he has some thoughts on the latest trends in e-discovery at the show.
You may recall an interview we did with Elster last year at ILTA about law firm technology purchasing trends.
My first LegalTech experience has started off well. Arrived at the Hilton with plenty of time to get lost in the sea of vendor booths (never, of course, being able to find the one I wanted). Yep, that was me looking lost, confused, and trying desperately to hide my fear behind my Blackberry.
I stopped in the middle of the exhibit lobby (again, pretending to be very busy and important) when I looked up to see a sign that said something to the effect of “Download the Mobile LegalTech App.”
So I did. And it worked.
Wouldn’t ya know, this handy little app helped me find exactly what I was looking for (for all of you wondering what that was, it was the Westlaw Business booth).
So, for all of you other first timers, I highly recommend downloading Mobile LegalTech. For those of you who don’t, I’ll spot you in the lobby, hiding behind your mobile devices trying to not look lost, and offer you the opportunity to use my Blackberry to find your way.
P.S. Anyone going to the LPO session at 1 p.m.? If so, I’ll see you there (if not, watch for a recap here on Legal Current)
Yesterday, Sharon Sayles Belton, vice president, Government Affairs and Community Relations for Thomson Reuters, Legal, was a guest on MSNBC’s Dylan Ratigan Show speaking about Minnesota’s high levels of civic engagement.
Filmed at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, yesterday’s program was part of a larger campaign, “Steel on Wheels,” which aims to identify and discuss solutions to the most pressing problems facing the American people and centralizes on four major themes: The Spirit of America, Innovation, The Building of Our Nation, and The Future Of America’s New Generations.
When asked what Minnesota’s secret to civic and community engagement is, Sayles Belton said it starts with quality of life. “The people that helped build this state really believed in the importance that everybody has the opportunity to live the American dream and to have their basic needs met,” said Sayles Belton.
She continued, “It’s a belief that still exists today, it’s not just rhetoric. People are willing to spend their time and their money towards making sure everybody has their basic needs met.”
Many businesses hold their domain name as one of their most valuable assets. Domain names enable consumers to quickly connect with particular businesses over the Internet. However, cyber squatters are known to register variations on domain names in the hope of either having the legitimate companies pay top dollar for the domain or to attract traffic to the domain while they maintain it.
How can you secure protection for your brand? What are the new generic top-level domains (gTLDs) and possible domain name issues? The rate of salary increases for in-house legal counsel continues to slow, according to Hildebrandt Baker Robbins’ 2010 Law Department Survey. Lauren Chung, editor of the survey, says that while salary increases have been slowing for several years, total compensation for in-house counsel is growing again.
We’re also on iTunes (just enter Legal Current in the search box).
Chung makes those comments in a new interview edition of our Legal Current podcast, which you can listen to in the player below:

The U.S. Constitution is one of the most powerful and impactful documents in existence. It literally touches every American’s life, and has since its creation in 1787. Recently, I had the opportunity to view the document first-hand as part of a new exhibit, “We the People: The First Official Printing of the U.S. Constitution,” sponsored [...]
