Science & Technology: turning ideas into jobs

Last spring, I was asked to join the Minnesota Science & Technology Advisory Commission – a collaborative group of leaders from industry, the investment community and higher education working with the Minnesota Science & Technology Authority to advance the growth and competitiveness of the state’s high-value science and technology industries.

The issues addressed in our work are important to me, and I am enjoying the experience of working with other technology and business leaders. Serving on this Commission has been a good complement to my work as the Chief Technology Officer for the Professional division of Thomson Reuters.

Over the last six months, the Commission worked to develop a strategic plan for helping Minnesota create up to 45,000 high-paying science and technology jobs, and another 100,000 indirect jobs, all in the next 10 years. The report was released yesterday.

Check out this video interview I participated in with our Minnesota Fox affiliate.

You can read the full report, along with an executive summary, on the Minnesota Science & Technology Authority website.

Increasing the speed of information

The release of the United States Federal Communication Commission (FCC) plan to improve the speed of the nation’s broadband network (Read the story on Reuters.com) shows that there is a shared interest is making sure the technology continues to progress with the information demands of citizens and businesses.

The FCC’s plan – “Connecting America: The National Broadband Plan” - sets a goal for 100 million American households to have Internet speeds of 100 megabits per second by 2020. According to Reuters, the current household average speed is about 4 Mbps. Even homes with cable or fiber Internet access only achieve speeds averaging 5 Mbps to 6 Mbps. Dakota County, where our Eagan office is located, averages 9 Mbps. (more…)

Making ultra high-speed broadband a reality

broadband

Today I presented the Minnesota Ultra High-Speed Broadband Task Force’s report. I was appointed chair of the Task Force by Governor Tim Pawlenty back in 2008. Since then, the 23-member Task Force met 18 times.

We’ve read, listened, studied, debated and eventually agreed by consensus to all the findings in the report.

I am very proud of my fellow Task Force members. We had conversations that were sometimes difficult. But the consensus process worked and I believe Minnesotans will be better off for it.

I am excited about what ultra high-speed Internet can do. Not only for customers of the legal businesses of Thomson Reuters who have clients all over the world, but for our employees who can possibly telecommute while they are serving those customers.

Ultra high-speed broadband is vital for Minnesota, and all states, and their economic vitality. It is important for me personally to live in a state that’s innovative and forward thinking.
