LegalTech New York 2012 has kicked off!

Thomson Reuters Technology Conferences 2012

Thomson Reuters recently hosted two technology conferences designed to showcase the latest trends and technology buzz impacting the market, as well as highlighting Thomson Reuters innovative technology, ranging from mobile to artificial intelligence, search and machine learning.

Attendees of the Thomson Reuters Technology Conference 2012 enjoyed one of many sessions.

In early January, the company hosted an internal technology conference drawing nearly 1,000 employees. The external technology conference was hosted about a week later and around 300 technologists spent the day on the Eagan campus.

Attendees were offered numerous sessions that included such topics as mobile web versus mobile apps, the cloud, collaboration, Android versus iOS development, and more. During the internal conference, James Powell, chief technology officer for Thomson Reuters, gave the keynote address about the central role of technology at Thomson Reuters.

At the external conference, attendees received a keynote address from Carolyn Parnell, chief information officer for the State of Minnesota. She discussed the issues facing the state surrounding consolidation and virtualization of the IT function, as well as how innovation is needed to succeed.

The panels featured leading technologists from Thomson Reuters, including Bob Schukai, Dan Bennett, Brian Quinn and Dr. Khalid Al-Kofahi. Other notable presenters included: Dr. Abhishek Chandra, University of Minnesota; Chris Derner, Informatica; John R. Fox, SWAT Solutions; and Dr. Jamshid Vayghan, IBM.

During each conference, Thomson Reuters hosted a coding competition where attendees could test their skills against their peers and win some great prizes.

Thomson Reuters names world’s 100 most innovative companies

With the launch of the Thomson Reuters 2011 Top 100 Global InnovatorSM program, Thomson Reuters has recognized the companies and institutions that lead the world in innovation activity. 

The 100 global innovator companies are geographically dispersed, with representation from the U.S., Asia, and Europe. The methodology for choosing the global innovators is based on four principle criteria: patent approval success rate, global reach of patent portfolio, patent influence in terms of citations and overall patent volume. 

David Brown, president of the IP Solutions business of Thomson Reuters defines innovation as “a means of growth and prosperity for companies and nations seeking to overcome sluggish economies and achieve competitive advantage.” 

The launch of the program has received much deserved attention from various media sources around the country, including the Economist, The New York Times, and USA Today, to name just a few.

Thomson Reuters Foundation Hosts First Annual TrustLaw Awards

Thomson Reuters Foundation, the charitable arm of the world’s leading source of intelligent information for businesses and professionals, today announced the winners of the first annual TrustLaw Awards. These are held in recognition of the best TrustLaw pro bono projects undertaken jointly by the legal profession, NGOs or social entrepreneurs in three categories; impact, innovation and collaboration. 

The winners were presented with their prizes at a ceremony held at the Museum of London

2011 Impact Award
Orrick, Latham & Watkins, who led a group of 17 other law firms, working with Adie to promote micro-entrepreneurship in Europe.

2011 Innovation Award
J. Sagar Associates and Hewlett Packard, for working with mDiagnostica to facilitate remote diagnosis of sick people in India’s rural areas.

2011 Collaboration Award
Mayer Brown, who led 18 other law firms, working with Transparency International to strengthen the global review process of the UN Convention against Corruption.

Women in the Law & Judiciary event in Dubai underscores importance of women practitioners in UAE law

The Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC) Courts and the region’s leading legal research experts, Thomson Reuters Westlaw Gulf, held the first “Women in the Law & Judiciary” panel discussion in the region this week. 

“Attracting and retaining women in the legal profession is a key challenge. This event offers an invaluable platform for some of the most influential women lawyers and judges in the region to further highlight these challenges and discuss what more can be done to address them,” said Helen Owers, chief development officer, /Stategic Markets at Thomson Reuters. 

The ground-breaking event took place at the prestigious Dubai Judicial Institute and brought together many of the finest legal and judicial minds in the UAE to collaboratively discuss and address some of the major challenges faced by women in the legal profession.

How we listened to customers at the ONESOURCE user conference

Hundreds of tweets…204 written comments…10 executive listening sessions… dozens of video interviews….and 1,500 pairs of orange sunglasses. Those were the stats from the “We’re Listening @ ONESOURCE” booth, where attendees at Tax & Accounting’s ONESOURCE user conference were able to provide feedback to Thomson Reuters about our products, services and anything else on their mind. 

“We’re Listening” is a program that engages clients by starting dialogues with them through both new and traditional media at customer events. The ‘We’re Listening” team of Thomson Reuters communications and social media specialists set up a booth at the ONESOURCE conference in Miami during the week of Nov 1-4 and gave attendees the opportunity to say, write and tweet their feedback throughout the event.
